In Reality, PS3 Leads the Xbox 360 by 1.5 Million Units in Europe

Microsoft says there's 1 million more Xbox 360s in homes across Europe, but according to our research, their numbers don't add up.

In a conversation with UK magazine MCV, Microsoft's regional director boss Chris Lewis said that the Xbox 360 is leading the PS3 across Europe, with the Xbox 360 having sold 1 million consoles more.

"We're confident we're actually around one million units ahead. We count install base differently to them," Chris said.

"We count the number of units in the hands of consumers. We are committed to continuing that momentum - not only in places like the UK, France and Germany. Continued growth in all parts of Europe is integral to winning overall."

So are Microsoft's numbers accurate? We wanted to know for sure, so we delved into the task of finding out for ourselves. What we found however, was not only does Microsoft not lead in Europe, Sony is actually ahead by 1.5 million units.

Our research places the PS3 ahead by a good margin. As of August 14th, 2009, Microsoft sold 9 million Xbox 360s across Europe, and as of August 11th, 2009, there were 10 million PS3s in European homes. The PS3 Slim offically launched on September 1st, 2009, however as soon as the newly redesigned 120GB PS3 Slim was announced on August 18th, 2009, the existing models got a price cut of $100.00 effective immediately after the announcement, sending sales of said models significantly higher across the board.

From the US to Europe to Japan, the PS3 Slim has dominated sales charts and in the first month of availability, Sony's flagship console went on to sell 1 million units world wide, with almost half of them in Europe. It's not difficult math at all, in fact, if Microsoft does not revise their strategy, the Xbox 360 will be facing a blowout in Europe against the PS3 in the coming months and years.

  1. This is fact. However, MS will continue to deny it and claim they are ahead. If that doesn't work, they'll bash the competition while beating their chests.

  2. Good for Sony, It's been three years since they've been shielding all sought of negative articles, now is time to shine.

Live long PS3.... now give me Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 and oh boy.....

  4. Well, interesting. BUT I've had five 360's now (two of which MS wouldn't fix because they didn't show RROD-even though I know from trying to have them fixed that it was a fault that usuall causes RROD)and MS replaced a couple of them when they failed as they couldn't/wouldn't fix them-that's what they told me anyway.

Now, I don't think I'm alone in MS not refurbing or fixing my failed units and know a few people who just elected to buy another before the warranty even existed. Given the high fail rate I imagine the actual nmber of 360s working in the EU will be a longer way short of the number of working PS3s(very low fail rate)than the sales suggest. Certainly the multi plat sales wins for PS3 with games like Fifa10, RE5, SF4 and TR:U suggest this is the case though IDK if we'll EVER get that figure from MS,will we?

I just think it's a lot darker for the 360 than this even tells us in the EU myself. The UK was where the 360 had it's euro stroghold and if the Slim can fight it here then Sony should romp all over MS in the continent this year.

  12. YUP! Sony is ahead. But I felt it necessary to update Wikipedia with current VGchartz's stats. Click on the Reference #132 for clarification.

Anyway, congrats Sony for getting being ahead of the 360! Now go for world domination!

It's good to see PS3 leading in Europe.

  17. @the post about invading their credit,

Wiki won't do anything if there's a valid ref. And unless you can find a more constant uptodate console sales site, I'll continue to use VGchartz.

    @the post about butthurt fanboys,

Come on now. Sony is still ahead! No reason to get all sensitive about it!

  21. Well the first problem is (and I don't see that you addressed this at all):

    Definition of Europe is? What?

You have a lot of confusion, UK, continental Europe, including EMEA yes/no?, including Russia yes/no?, including Australia (PAL Regions) yes/no?

Currently it's like apples and oranges!!

  22. Sony are way ahead over here despite being released over a year later, having more competition and costing far more money. That pretty much speaks for itself in terms of how popular the PlayStation brand is compared to the Xbox.

A lot of Americans seem to be pretty delusional about the popularity of the 360 and like to conveniently ignore any stats that aren't from the US.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Totally false information. Eurogamer saw the actual sale through data from Chart Track and GFK in November 08 and there was a lead of over a million for the 360 in mainland Europe. You can check these numbers right now This was reconfirmed in Jan. There is no way this number got smaller between now and then. In fact it likly went up all year as the 360 lead pretty much grew WW all year. Then with the price cut on the PS3 it may have made up for some of this year. None of this shipped nonsense. What is more is Sony includes pretty much every place under the sun for "Europe" unlike MS shipped figures. If you add in AU which is the largest unit outside the territory the lead grows even more. All this is factual and can be checked and rechecked.

  24. Contrary to what your 10th grade english teacher told you about Wikipedia, it is a reliable source. Wikipedia uses sources for it's information to provide JUST the information and not the useless drivel that bloats other articles.

As long as the author checked Wikipedia's sources, there shouldn't be a problem.

  25. the xbox 360 is a deeply flawed machine, RROD, E74 etc. The price has been cut on so many occasions and so drastically that is can surely have no credibility remaining. And the guy Jim above who classified Australia as possible inclusion of European stats, stop embarassing your fellow Americans, you can't all be so introverted...there's a far larger, older world out there, it's time you realised that most Americans are fundamentally from European stock and many retain the cultures...Spanish, Italian, Irish, British, Germans, Poles etc. so get real.

  26. No surprise - the PS3 is far better value for money. That's just a fact. If anything, the gap between the two is only going to get wider in the next 6 months when the PS3 get games such as Uncharted 2, God Of War 3, Gran Turismo 5 and White Knight Chronicles.

  28. I'm so tired of the whining of fanboys on either side, so sick of the spin doctoring by either corporation.

For me it all boils down to one thing: Corporate attitude. I can't stand Sony, they thought they were just going to walk away with the sales figures this time. They thought it was a given that they would just stay on top, and some execs actually insulted American consumers because their console was in distant third place to begin the current gen.

Hate MS all you want, but as was really beat to death during the whole buzz about Windows being a monopoly, competition is healthy for the market. Sony NEEDS to come in last before they realize they can't just throw out whatever they feel and get the most sales simply because they did last time around.

I remember when CD players were around $1000 US. Now you can buy a portable player for about $20. The same happened with plain old DVD and the same will happen with Blu-Ray. Anybody with a brain knows it, and I for one refuse to pony up the extra un-necessary cash to support Sony just because they couldn't wait for the cost of the tech to come down before incorporating it. They also charge you for a wifi receiver even if you don't want it. Contrary to the argument that the PS3 is a better deal because wifi is built in, I feel I shouldn't have to pay for a feature if I don't want it.

Ugh, much as I like my 360 I'm going to end up putting away serious gaming until all the serious gamers grow up, ironic considering how many of them scream that Wii is for kids. All this fanboy arguing just makes me cringe. I may hate Sony as a corp., and I may like MS simply because I felt they respected me more as a consumer, but this just needs to be given a rest. I had my reasons for going one direction and I'm happy. Everyone else do the same and shut your pie holes.

  30. I believe Sony, their numbers have always been truthful, not the lies and BS that Microsoft constantly spew. They stuff the retail chain to make headlines. And dumb-ass gamers and blogging sites like Joystiq and Kotaku fall for it..

  34. XBox 360 clearly sucks no one cares for it in Europe since there just repeat buyers and new comers that are going to buy that console is just going to be another victim like everyone else that had or soon will have the RRod or er74 and they'll become repeat buyers!.

    ReplyDelete
  35. And you wonder why Microfony has 30 million user base is because the repeat buyers, there base is just inflated by the same people that had or soon have there XBox 360 break, Microfony's base is false Sony and Nintendo have a real user base.
