Epic Boss: Next Gears of War will have Natal Support

Mark Rein is the head honcho of Epic Games, so when the man speaks people listen. The studio is home to titles like the Gears of War franchise and Unreal Tournament, two of the biggest names in the industry. According to Mark, even those titles will have Natal functionality, Speaking to XOM, mark said:

We're just sitting down with [Natal] in the next two weeks, I think, to bring our studio guys in to have a look," Rein said.

On Gears of War, his answer was rather intriguing:

"I have no idea where we're going from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff and we will support it. I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support," he said. "We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform."

"I think everyone will do something that exploits Natal once it's out there and everyone has," Rein voiced. "So will people be able to benefit from it? Yes. And then if they want to make that 'oh my god' really cool Natal experience, well, we've got the engine for that. I'm pretty psyched about it."

Thanks OXM

  1. I don't think playing Gears using Natal will be an enjoyable experience.

  5. This is just from an engine support point of view. So if developer "X" want to make godzilla destroys tokyo featuring Natal then they can use the Unreal engine to do it...that's all this article says. Your talking about a company that took mechanics other games had and actually made them fun...so i think they have it under control ;)

  6. oh please guys, it will be optional I'm sure. don't like how they do it? don't buy natal

  8. natal is meant for casual gamers...Gears is not casual..besides didn't Epic say just a few weeks ago the wouldn't release another Gears til the next generation of consoles

  9. I do believe that "Anonymous" is a ps3 fanboy. How can you say Gears is not for Natal when he or she haven't truly seen the system for what it's really worth. Evidentally the developers see potential in making it work for the game and I have faith that they'll make it work just fine, it's not like Natal is coming out tomorrow or anything, they still have major time to make it work. So Anonymous, whoever you may be....go soak your head, cause obviously you're a XBOX 360 hater!

  13. One of the most stupid ideas they've ever had, Natal support for Gears of War will completely ruin the game. I wish they would stop trying to do these things for the casual gamer.

  15. i think people forget that just because natal is gesture based - it doesn't mean you can't hold the controller in your hands. no one has even used natal yet, so why all the crying?

  17. I've only bought 360 for Halo and Gears. Both great games. But I can't help but think that the sequels they come up with is not going to be much different. 360 people does not have a standard like the ps3 guys. Look at the system, it's built like a piece of shit. But 360 guys buys it again when it breaks down. Mine's broke down "5" times. Makes you wonder how legit their sales numbers are huh? Natal? LoL, looks like a joke. Cheers! Here's Bill Gates trying to steal your money again.

  21. when i said Gears is not casual i was not bashing 360...i like all consoles and each has its own unique franchises...but when a developer decides to drastically change an IP to try and market to casual gamers they lose fan base...point is.. keep your hardcore games hardcore and your casual games casual

  22. he is referring to the unreal engine supporting natal not specifically gears. There are plenty of games that use the unreal engine and its important to epic to support natal so that their engine can continue to be licensed and used for a variety of games. gears wont be one of them so just settle down children

  23. To all Natal hater

You all are bunch of fatty who like laid there asses on there chairs. THIS will be interesting playing a GOW with Natal. I Mean THIS IS HARDCORE GAME AND YOU HAVE TO FEEL THE HARDCORE. No im not a Wii fanboy so shush. We cant keep living forever with control someday in the future game will become more motion than controling. Is really good idea and health to enjoy like you ARE there playing than sitting front of TV. Also what bother me is this article i remember next GOW will come on Next Generation console...the hell Cliff >.>

  25. ok first im a ps3 fanboy 360 hater and now im a natal hater...as i said before. "I LIKE ALL CONSOLES".. i WILL buy a natal when it comes out..IM SORRY i like gears, zelda, metal gear solid the way it is

  26. You all shut up natal is one of the best thing in video games industry in this gen and it will be awesome to play hardcore games and fps games in natal so dont say any shit intell you see the game work on natal you guys dont know anything about the new stuff did you know what hideo kojima said(he make the metal gear and its one of the best game) he said about natal is cool and i think its the same step when we make 3d games when we was playing 2d games.thats what the man said do ya know whats that mean no i dont think so

    ReplyDelete
  27. Natal is changing the way we play and do things thats good we need this change because the video game world needs to move forward with new ideas and will, the hand controller has gone though changes over the years and Natal will add another way to enjoy your games in a sense its still a controller the only change is you do not make contact with it, but like many have said already give it a chance just like we were happy to give the Wii an Iam sure when Sony release their version of a motion controller it will be given a chance.so lets wait and see want the techs come with, I think its gonna rock some people might not ever pick up a hand controller again (lol).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Keep in mind no one's suggesting that controllers will be obsolete. Stop being so closed minded. What they are saying is they will use Natal to enhance our gaming experience in some shape or form. Who knows how? No one right now, but imagine the possibilities:

    1. Your facial features incorporated into the game (I know not new, but totally doable with Natal)
    2. Voice/Hand commands
    3. Melee attacking by simply throwing a punch or a kick
    4. Pointing or nodding to the path you'd like to take
    5. Your actual name (or one of your choosing) incorporated into the audio and script of the game
    6. You've seen how driving already works
    7. Throwing a grenade by actually "throwing"

The possibilities are endless. Two things I'll bet the bank on: (a) Some developer will come up with something that totally rocks that no one has thought of yet to use this new tech and (b) Controllers will still be around to use.

So don't be so quick to judge until you've actually seen what's delivered. If Wii can do what it's done with their technology(numbers don't lie), Natal can only get better.

  29. here comes the lag fest, turn right, half a sec later marcus turns right

    ReplyDelete
  30. im not knocking natal..but that last post brings up a interesting point..if natal can do real-time motion tracking ONLINE without lag....that would be cool

    ReplyDelete
  31. either way it goes they need to do something about the game as a whole first. don't introduce something else to the gamers and not fix the lag, glitches, and online cheaters. I am a true gamer. a person that plays the game and challenge others to see how good i am not like the guys that wake up and say they are going to see what this new cheat does today. get a server or something or ask ea sports if you could borrow one. pay people to play your game and moniter the cheats that happen instead of testing the online multiplayer with the staff as you guys did. better yet do a beta test.
