3D + Wand + Exclusives = Win for PS3's Future

Lights, camera, action! It came on the scene in 2006 and the events that played out thereafter could be pulled directly from a story detailing the good fortunes of someone gone bad and eventually came right back to their former glory. I don't work at Sony, but when looking at what the company has in store for the PS3, including the endless possibilities of Blu-ray, Wand Controller, the second to none exclusive lineup, PSN, Home, and stereoscopic 3D gaming, there's no other way to the visualize it in my mind. The PS3's future has 'win' written all over it. Let's take them one at a time...

The "Wand Controller" -

Some might think Nintendo was the company which started the motion trend but they're totally wrong. So wrong that we had to provide proof to demonstrate not only did Sony started the trend, but what they had back then with the PS2 Eye Toy challenges the likes of Microsoft's Project Natal. The mistake Sony made was not capitalizing on the wave; literally giving millions of consumers away to Nintendo and affording the company to make billions of dollars, some of what could have been the electronics giant's cash.

Now they've gone back full throttle to their roots with what is universally known as the "Wand". Sony has yet to name the device but the prototype looks extremely promising. And if the PS2 Eye Toy was ahead of its time, there's not a doubt that the "Wand" will be an amazing motion device. Quench your thirst with the video below.

Blu-ray -

It is no secret that the decision Sony made to include a Blu-ray player in the PS3's build instead of settling for a DVD format, caused the hardware giant a lot of pain. Firstly, it caused the massive PS3 shortages at launch because back then the technology was brand new and components were scarce. It also was very expensive, adding to the amount loss on every console sold by a great percentage. Blu-ray is the reason the PS3's initial price was $699, a stretch for even the most avid Sony supporter.

But now everyone is singing Blu-ray's praises. Developers are now starting to realize the full potential of the format and are thanking Sony for taking such a risk. It is also future-proof for at least the next 7 years and even beyond. And while the Xbox 360 is stuck with the DVD format, limiting the amount of content that can be squeezed into one disc, PS3 has room to rent. It's a big win for Sony.

PSN -

Say what you may about Xbox Live being leaps and Bounds over PSN, but it's just not true. Yes, Xbox Live has been around longer but that fact simply adds more credence as to why PSN is a formidable and even better in many ways experience. First and foremost the service is free. No need to pay monthly fees to play games online; if you have a PS3 and broadband internet connection then jump online and kick some butt. Also the content available on the network is growing rapidly, the exclusives like flower, flow, and many others help bolster the unique offerings only to be had on PSN.

The network has over 27 million registered users, membership is not limited to PS3 owners, but it includes folks with PSPs.

Home -

Although it's a work in progress, Home has seen its population grow from zero to over 9 million members in less than three years. Astounding figures when you link that with the fact that you really can't do much in the custom-made for PS3 social network. You can't jump into an online battle straight from Home, a function that would help. But there's a plethora of great offerings as well: 3D space, apartments, great interaction, meet and make friends and so much more. Is Home where Sony envisioned it to be? I doubt it, but it's surely not where it was 2 years ago.

The exclusives -

We've talked about this time and time again, and there's no need to go into detail; Sony's exclusive lineup for 2010 and beyond is one that's hard to beat:

God of War III
Heavy Rain
Gran Turismo 5
Agent
Killzone 3
Resistance 3
The Last Guardian
White Knight Chronicles
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
ModNation Racers
MAG
Yakuza 3
inFamous 2
Syphon Filter
Twisted Metal

And many more. Now don't think that the Xbox 360 has no exclusives; that's not true by a long short but it's fair to say that the PS3 has some games that any gamer would love to get the hands on coming in the near future.

3D -

I saved the best for last; and believe it or not, 3D gaming will be the next big thing and PS3 is leading the way.

Sony recently announced that 3D gaming is coming to the PS3 via a firmware update in 2010. The giant will be the first in the gaming industry to take full advantage of stereoscopic 3D entertainment, leaving the Wii and Xbox 360 in PS3's dust. The electronics giant recently showed off Polyphony Digital and Evolution's MotorStorm with full depth of field using the emerging 3D display technology.

But there's more, Sony says it also plans to integrate the stereoscopic 3D technology directly into the PS3 beginning in 2011 or 2012. The company has thrown its weight behind the tech and last month, a full presentation was given to investors.

I hope you're now convinced (if you were not already) that PS3 has a bright and enduring future. And if all goes well, the years ahead could be better than anything we've experienced as gamers in this industry. Should be fun.

Also we have over 50 PSOne games that play on the PS3 through PSN, We have over 80 PSP games that work on PS3 through PSN, Also we have the PSN games ( Like XBL's arcade games ) We also have PS3 games to buy from PSN, We also ( IN UK ) have over 580 films to rent with 100's to buy and own, not just rent. XBL only has 271 to rent and you can't buy them either. You have VidZone, for the Video Music Lovers with 1000's and 1000's of video's, also you have iplayer which is great if you missed a program, or great if you just want to catch up on your programs. 4OD is coming even though PS3 can use that now through it's internet Browser, same as Twitter/Facebook/Youtube, ect. Also we can use Grooveshark which is for all music lovers, it's all free to use and holds millions of songs for you to play through your PS3 / PC.

Also PSN 99% of the time gets some great deals and good DLC. Check this out for an example.

    http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/12/17/%E2%80%98heads-up%E2%80%99-playstation-store-update-17th-december-2009/

PS3 also won the Metacritic’s Game Platform Power Rankings. In other words the games are better made than other consoles and have scored higher for this. Also PS3 holds more AAA exclusive titles than the 360 console.

SkyTV/SkyPlayer is only a timeed exclusive on the 360 same as netflix was. Soon Sky will be on the PS3 just like Netflix is right now. And due to the FACT that PS3 plays both DVD and Blu-Ray the PS3 netflix library is bigger and better than the 360's library.

Now we have 3D gaming to the PS3, with games running at 1080p. Now thats going to be awesome with the ( PS3's new controller nick named WAND ).

I could go on all day. but the best console for the money to by now is the [PS3]. And just so people know, you can buy your PSN cards from Zavvi.co.uk, as they are under £16.00 for a £20.00 spend on the PSN. So every game that says £10.00 on PSN will really cost ££8.00.

  3. AWESOME GAMING!!
YOU'RE RIGHT 100% OF THE WAY, I USED TO BE A NINTENDO FANBOY, TILL THE PSOne launched, coz it played my N64 Games, then a PlayStation Fanboy from there, then I got EVERY PLAYSTATION CONSOLE AND GAME ON THE PSONE! MOST OF THE GAMES ON THE PS2, AND TONNES OF GAMES ON PS3!!
THE PSP-1000,2000 AND 3000 GAMES ARE COOL, BUT I can't get a lotta PSP Go! Games coz I'll run outta memory space and keep on buying Memory Chips, ALL WITH SONY WRITTEN ON IT LOL! = P
But Sony won 3 outta 4 console wars so far, the PSOne won, the PS2 Won, the PSP Won, the PSP-3000/Go, failed against the DSi and the DSiLL
But the PS3 ain't gunna lose, Sony has the only three consoles that has every had more sales than the Nintendo Wii, PSOne, PS2 and out this console war, the Wii has only been beaten once in sale numbers, by the PS3, this shows how many Sony PlayStation Fans are coming back together and uniting so that Sony can spit at Mirosoft's face in advance at the next console wars and this one too like it did in the last, KNOCKOUT!! K O!!!
But the Wii is survivin!! That's the problem, but once the 360 and PS3 get motion tech GOODBYE NINTENDO!!! AU REVOIR!!
    ADIOS!!! NAMESTE!! SHASREEYA KAL!!
    ALONZEE!!
    FAREWELL MY LITTLE BROTHA!

  4. LBDz..

Without defeat, you do not know the true meaning of winning.

    This is true.

The PS3 ( WAS )losing to the 360, but once again like they always do, Sony got a good view about how to get their console back in the game with fighting spirit to win.

PS3 now is cheaper to buy. The PS3 has better exclusive games. The PS3 has the better tech in it's console. The PS3 has a better build quality than 360. The PS3 is future proof due to Blu-Ray player and being upgradeable through Internet and parts ( Hard Drives, ect ). The PS3 Has better tech coming to it's console than 360. The PS3 has a bigger games release list coming for it's console. The PS3 has a better layout than 360's. The PS3 is out selling the 360 in the same time span. The PS3 cost less to run than the 360. The PS3 doesn't cost any extra money to play once bought, unlike the 360. The PS3 is free to play online. The PS3 holds the better media player, as well as media add-ons, like NetFlix ( See Above for differences on consoles )iplayer,4OD, ect ect.

The PS3 is the better console. Thats plain and simple.

You can also GAME SHARE stuff bought from PSN with 5 active PS3 / PSP consoles. So 5 friends can have my game i bought to save them money, while i share their games to save myself money.

The cost of having a family on the PS3/PSN is £0 / $0. It's FREE for a whole family to play online gaming.

The cost of having a family on the 360/XBL is £40.00 / $50.00 per person. It's NOT free for a whole family to play online gaming

So for people to see the real for online gaming...See below.

A family of 5 on each console to play online gaming. ( Costs can vary depending where bought )

    PS3 = PSN x a family of 5 = £0 / $0 no cost.

    Xbox 360 = XBL x a family of 5 = £200.00 / $250.00 MASSIVE cost.

You make you minds up what console is the future ;o)

  5. Ok, so some of the other anonymous comments on here are obvious fanboys. Or maybe just misguided. Here are some things to bear in mind (I'm a fan of games, not a system fanboy)

You say that the PS3 can play PS1 games as though it's a unique feature? That's two generations ago, and not all games. The 360 can play a lot of original XBox games (one generation ago), without needing to pay to download them. Just pop the disc in.
And if you don't mind paying to download them, the Wii allows you to select games from TurboGrafx16, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Master System, Sega MegaDrive AND full support for Gamecube games (that's 4 previous Nintendo generations and 2 Sega generations!)

I don't believe there is such a thing as "future-proof". Some things last longer than others, but it will still be replaced in time. That said, I do hope to see Blu-ray last a while, as I have invested in it myself. But as an early-adopter of DVD, and seeing that last 10 years before being superceded (it hasn't been replaced by Bluray yet), I'm not going to expect that long a shelf-life for Bluray.

I have an account on Home. I haven't logged in for over 8 months. I think that says all you need to about how good Home is.

Like Bluray, I'll be interested to see how well 3D takes off, but again I'm going to sit on the fence for this. It requires a big investment: 3D-capable bluray player, 3D-capable TV, supporting titles, extra glasses for when friends come over... With lots of people having recently spent large amounts on a big plasma/lcd to get the best of their PS3/360/bluray player, do you seriously expect them to replace it with an even-more expensive version? So soon?

And the Wand? In all the years I have been gaming (25+), I haven't seen many accessories that don't come with the system, but get required for a game, succeed. Wii Fit being the most notable success. If Sony are clever, they will follow MS's lead and bundle it in with all new machines when it comes out.

  6. LBDz..

Someone said this.. ((( You say that the PS3 can play PS1 games as though it's a unique feature? That's two generations ago, and not all games. The 360 can play a lot of original XBox games (one generation ago), without needing to pay to download them. Just pop the disc in. )))

Now what you have to remember is this. You don't have to download the PSOne games either, you can also just pop the disc into the PS3 and play the game.

But if you haven't got the game, you can download that game from PSN and share that game with 5 other active consoles, IE, PS3's / PSP's. I bought Final Fantasy VII and shared that with my mates. Something you cannot do with the xbox 360's XBL games. Also even though F-Fantasy VII is PSOne game, it's still one of the best made.?

Now with the XBOX games on XBL they have stopped placing them onto XBL due to moving forward. So although you can buy a handful on XBOX games from XBL it's not as good as the PSOne games list from PSN, let alone PSP's games list.

HOME has also changed a lot in 8 months. It also holds more than 8 million members, so it's not that bad anymore. HOME is a community-based social gaming networking service, in other words it's a place to hang out and meet other gamers. Much better than anything XBL offers. You have Free games, mini-games which can be single player or multiplayer, you get exclusive trailers for films and games, with prize-giving events to entertaining events, pre-order bonuses for PS3 games like KillZone 2, buy the game and get a free costumes for their avatar, same as other games like Infamous, A crack in time, M.A.G, ect, right down to Video game developers are able to create "Developer Spaces" for their developing company to showcase their products in Home.

HOME is not that bad to be honest.

Also Blu-Ray is here to stay, so much so that now when you buy a Blu-Ray disc, you will get a DVD copy and a Digital copy also.
That alone shows one thing, Past , Present, and Future all on one disc.

Xbox 360 doesn't have Blu-Ray, it has the Past tech which is DVD.

PS3 ( FACT ) is the worlds best technological console EVER released on the market to date. This statement alone shows that now is the time to buy a PS3 over the older xbox 360 model. PS3 just has more going for it then 360.

    EDIT to my last post.

Sony's PlayStation Home trumpet is blowing as the company announces that 10 million users inhabit the virtual world.

  8. The PS3 has next year wrapped up with the quality of games alone. Final Fantasy XIII has sold 1 million copies in Japan already and even though it's not exclusive in the west it will definetly sell more on PS3 than 360 over it's lifetime. Gran Turismo 5 is another game that's guaranteed to sell in the millions, along with God Of War 3. Then, with the Blu - Ray format quickly outpacing DVD many more people may pick up a PS3 just for it's HD movie playback. Next year is going to be a really tough time for Microsoft, they've been outsold by the PS3 for the past couple of months and it looks like things are only going to get worse for them in 2010.......

  10. PS3 is here to stay. Devs are starting to understand just how good the GPU is when it works along side the Cell CPU. Before they realised this, Devs started to make games without using the SPE's of the cell. so the GPU was getting strangled.

Now that devs have realised that the PS3's GPU is not like the old type ones on the market or like the one in the xbox 360, and that the cell CPU works with the GPU for graphics due to working together they are now getting better and better for the PS3.

Example, ported games were really bad at the start due to Devs not knowing the new tech in the PS3. People even stated that the PS3 just wasn't as good as the 360, based on the bad ported games saying that the GPU just couldn't handle framerates like the 360 can.

People talk about the 360 has 48 unified pixel Pipelines, and the PS3 only has 24 dedicated pixel pipelines and 8 vertex pipelines, so that the 360 is better. Well now Devs can see this is not true as Dedicated pipelines are better than unified as over twice the amount can run through a dedicated pipeline than unified. Plus the cell takes the shaders load from the GPU if needed. ( Uncharted 2 ) works like this as does KillZone 2.

PS3 imo is here to stay. This time next year 360 will be in last place.
