Let's not get this twisted, from what we've seen, Bayonetta is an awesome game. No doubt. Upon playing the the fresh IP, you can't help but be enthralled by the overall awesomeness of the game. She stylishly wicked. Her feet and hands are equipped with pistols that aids her in pulling off heavenly combos....So much so that's it's sometimes hard to tell where she is onscreen because of the way she obliterates enemies - from one side to the other until the're vanquished. No doubt the witch is deadly. But is all the flash, although great, enough to dethrone the god father of them all, Kratos? According to Edge, Bayonetta slaps God of War to the curb and VG Arabia reckoned that Sega's new sexy lady puts every other action game to shame.
We call bull, Kratos is the King, and we've yet to see an action title that has defined a genre like the God of War franchise has. So much so that titles like Dante's Inferno and you guessed it, Bayonetta, are learning from the veteran series, because of that, we conclude, only fools would say that Bayonetta is better than the God of War franchise, only fools. Here's why.
Truth be told, many aspects of Bayonetta are taken directly out of the God of War universe:
Combos - While playing the demo, you'll realize that many of the combos have similarities with God of War. Stylish, wicked, quick and brutal is the way Kratos takes down his foes, and Bayonetta follows suit.
Button Mashing - Another element from God of War that Bayonetta uses is the button pressing finishing move, the game even go as far as to feature both reflex and button mashing events which can lead to some extremely brutal finishers.
These two similarities listed above proves that the title, while great, is learning from the those before it, expressly the God of War franchise. But there are many more reasons.
When God of War first came on the scene on the PS2, it was like nothing we'd ever seen or experienced before in an action game. Part two came in the closing days of the PS2 and it's still better both in gameplay and graphically than a lot of the so-called next gen titles we're seeing today.
On March 10th, 2010, gamers around the world will experience what will be the most epic conclusion we've witnessed in action games. Ever. Everything in the God of War III demo trumps Bayonetta to bits in a mili-second. God of War's length will be double and almost triple that of Bayonetta. The graphics are already unrivaled, the gameplay is already establised and the gore will keep you awake at nights.
Bayonetta on the other hand while good, is a fresh IP that's only now putting its feet in the blood soaked foundation built by Kratos and Dante of Devil May Cry. Allow the game to have a sequel or two, and then we could start doing comparisons.
Until then, you're fool to say that Bayonetta is better than the God of War franchise.

Ha! Let the debate begin! Good points, and yes, I'd rather have God of War III way before I even Consider Bayonever. Ha!
ReplyDeleteYou Know I Wouldnt really compare bayonetta to god of war, its more like a comparison to devil may cry, dantes inferno is alot like god of war
ReplyDeleteGod of War is an excellent series but I'm willing to at least try out Bayonetta before I start comparing it to games like God of War and Devil May Cry..I'm quite excited for Bayonetta as well as GoW3.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your terrible, terrible excuse for gaming journalism.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it terrible? Because you don't agree with the author?
ReplyDeleteYou guys can't take no heat. It's true
i finished bayonetta, and just say: bayonetta is a new masterpiece, but it can't be compare to God Of War. That's true.
ReplyDeletebut it's more dificult than GOW, you can try Bayonetta Hard Mode, lol, die so muchhhhhhhhh
this isnt a comparison. the story of kratos is epis bayonetta cant even think to come with a story as epic as kratos that streches a cross 4 games in 1
ReplyDeleteWell im sure both games will be great, but I think its obvious Bayo will have a deeper combo system and that matters a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteTo the 1st post,
ReplyDelete"Bayonever"?!? Oh my GOD! Did you spend all night coming up with that!?! I bet you squirted a little in your pants when you typed it, let alone being the first on this blog to type it!
Well it's DUMB, very dumb. Actually NO! IT'S RETARDED. Let me tell you how horribly retarded it is... SO pathetic that I wrote this specifically for your stupidity!
That's how phucking dumb it is!
I wasn't impressed with the Bayonetta demo because I never really liked devil may cry and no matter what people say it is very similar
ReplyDeletebut also I was somewhat underwhelmed with the gow3 demo, the gameplay hasn't evolved at all, on the PS2 stunning graphics, QTEs and some basic combat where enough to make it great, now it's not and that's all the demo showed
neither game begins to approach the response and quality of the ninja gaiden combat system
Let's get one thing clear. God of War's gameplay is an absolute joke compared to other games in this genre(and this is coming from a huge God of War fan). It can easily be mashed through, and the harder difficulties just come down to dodging and pressing Square, Square, Triangle. As far as gameplay is concerned, the only reason Kratos is popular is that he is extremely brutal. The gameplay of GoW is very simple and has very little depth to it in comparison to DMC or NG. It cannot possibly compare to Bayonetta's depth, and I've only played the demo, not the full retail game.
ReplyDeleteI very much doubt the Bayonetta can beat GoW's story though. The Greek mythology in GoW is fantastic. But when we come down to it, games in this genre are all about the gameplay. GoW is just brutal. That's it. It has very little depth. If it wasn't so brutal, everyone would laugh at it and move onto another title. Bayonetta's gameplay is leagues above GoW, as are DMC and NG. Now, the real question will be how will Bayonetta stand up to those series since it already proved itself over GoW with just a mere demo.
I really love how serious that one guy's comment was. Just because someone's article goes against your point of view doesn't make it a bad article whatsoever. I bet if I put in here "Resident Evil 5 isn't very good" I would get a fanboy outcry unlike anything ever seen before, even if I gave completely valid points as to why it did. As I said earlier, Bayonetta is on the top of my want to play list mainly because I don't have a Playstation 3 and can't try GOW3 even if I wanted to (which I do)
ReplyDeleteI think the same comparison comes to Uncharted and Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider has better combat, adventure challenges, and is more difficult. Uncharted in it's pieces was a joke of a game. The same thing applies to GoW and Bayonetta. GoW has practically no combat where Bayonetta's combat is much deeper than DMC and as such very good. I had a friend who played Uncharted and loved it. He also disliked Bayonetta and swore by GoW. Reason why, he's a PS3 player and a n00b so he can piss off. LTP. Ps3 controller sucks for bayonetta, much better on xbox. go 360.
ReplyDeleteAbove me: You're obviously a 360 fanboy, no one will take you serious...
ReplyDeleteYou are a fool, Bayonetta is made from the creator of this genre, dont forget this.
ReplyDeleteAnd so what? Did the "creator" of this genre created everything? There are many originalities in GOW...
ReplyDeleteGreat points by the author, although I still believe the Bayonetta hype train has already left the yard...
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the next comparison?? GTA and Need for Speed Shift??
ReplyDeleteThis makes none sense, only ps3 fanboys like you can make a shit like this.
--'
God of War is the same boring game since the first one and only fanboys says God of War is better than Bayonetta.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author, after playing the Bayonetta demo, only a fool would say that it's better than GOW3 - and the music, 90s arcade techno crap. The way she walks looks good, but I can't take the game seriously. And she's not hot, her body is shaped strangely, or her head is tiny. If they wanted sex appeal, they should look at the Soul Caliber girls for character design models. GOW3 is epic, Bayonetta is good.
ReplyDeleteBayonetta's combat is nothing like God of War, its not even close to it. Much more fast paced and over the top, different weapons, guns which you can move to the feet or hands. If anything its much like Devil May Cry since its from the creator of that game.
ReplyDeleteNot that God of War combat isn't over the top but still much different then Bayonetta's.
lol i think GOW3 is better, but Bayonetta is good to.i like how kratos beats the shit out of everything he sees.
ReplyDeleteYour whole post/article wreaks of blatant God of War fanboyism.
ReplyDeleteGod of War in NO way shapes or defines the Action genre, with the exception of graphical/ aesthetic appeal. It is sloppy, button-mashy, self-gratifying eye-candy. Yes, I've played through all difficulty modes. No, in no way is God of War deeper or more genre-defining than the original Devil May Cry (which DID re-define the genre). As has been stated by others, the creator of Devil May Cry is the creator of Bayonetta. If any game will re-define the Action genre, it will be Bayonetta.
Combos: You're kidding, right? Ninja Gaiden has combos too. Did it "rip off" God Of War? God of War invented combos now?
Not only that, but the combos are NOTHING alike. Bayonetta uses two buttons and the analog stick exclusively to string together combos. GOW uses two melee buttons, plus a crap-load of shoulder buttons in conjunction with said melee buttons to pull off flashy, useless combos and attacks.
Button Mashing: Wow. It's not the first time I've seen this ridiculous arguement, but it always amazes me when people bring it up. Yes, God of War has QTE's and button-mashing prompts. In NO way is it exclusive to the series. DINO CRISIS had QTE's. Obviously, GOW ripped off Dino Crisis, right?
Look, the bottom line is this: God of War's gameplay is a button-mashing joke. It's loose and unecessarily robust seeing as the most basic of combos work just as well as the stupidly complex ones. Hell, Ninja Gaiden had a stupid-large combo system too, but that game was 100 times tighter than anything GOW brought to the table.
Bayonetta has a massive but very easy to use combo and move system, a great combo-point and ranking system which encourages skillful play, plenty of challenge, good humor, and a sense of scale that rivals, if not overtakes God of War completely.
Unless you are blind or a fool, you would know Bayonetta is the Action game King. Only a fanboy says God of War is better.

ReplyDeletei played the demo for both games i was lucky enough to get the code in a email from sony. And i must say god of war is so much better i couldnt put it down and ive coompleted it 4, 6 times also when my friends coem i show them it straight away 2 on my friends are now thinking of getting a ps3 or just closly looking at prices for some reason. Bayontta is amazing to maby im not a big jrpg fan becaus im not but i played it once and it just seems so repetitive with the same finishng move. even through god of war is the same when you have the controller in your hand it does feels amazing for people you havnt played the demo watchign a video doesnt compare you hae to go play it.
ReplyDeleteYou know i've read a lot of articles like this one where they compare bayonetta and god of war and how god of war is the "grandfather" of these types of games and well i would have to say you are wrong. First off devil may cry...the first one...is made by the same guy making bayonetta...saying that first so we can get that in the clear. Second devil may cry came out before god of war so if god of war has anyone to thank its combo system for it would be devil may cry. However god of war did add a new layer onto the combo system that devil may cry laid out but you can easily see that bayonetta is taking it to a whole new level. I still don't know why everyone keeps comparing them there both gonna be good so just get them both....but like someone pointed out god of war and dantes inferno are more closely related then god of war and bayonetta.

ReplyDeleteThank You!! its about time someone told thr truth. I played the bayonetta demo and couldnt stand it. I also played the gowIII demo from the gow collection and loved it.
ReplyDeleteI guess if peopel are going to like bayonetta then that is fine but i cant believe that its already being called the "perfect" game, bassed off of a demo...
the foolishness is yours, go back to school fanboy. Bayonetta didn't borrow from God of War, it builts on what worked in DMC. QTE is the one new element that was introduced in GoW, other than that its another robust action game that even IT, is DMC based. so there's your lesson of the day, if there's a godfather for this genre, it is DMC and not GOW. GOW is just better. face the truth.

ReplyDeleteKeep the discussion clean guys, no indecent language will be tolerated. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIndeed ONLY FOOLS!! ONLY FOOLS!! KRATOS IS GOD!! And GOW is the greatest!!
ReplyDeleteFinally, a journalist with a working brain in their head. The only people who would think Bayonetta is worthy of challenging GOW are people who don't know what videogames are.
ReplyDeleteBayonetta is for women and non - gamers. Trying to say Bayonetta is better than God Of War would be like trying to say Tomb Raider is better than Uncharted, LMAO!
Real gamers see Bayonetta for what she really is, a fraud.
Tomb Raider IS better than Uncharted you idiot!
DeleteGod of War and Bayonetta are both good games. which is better is a personal opinion everyone is entitled to have. Fanboyism is a plague that does the industry and the community more loss than gain, gamers should be better why can't you get it? Fanboyism and Loyalty are two different things, which is you?
ReplyDeleteIt's surely very funny. Many pepople think that they are "real gamers" yet they actually don't know what its meant.
ReplyDeleteGOW is surely a very good game. It has interesting story, great atmosphere, amazing graphic (one of the best in ps2 and now ps3 also), but its combat system average at best if we compare to DMC, NG and now Bayonetta.
Mainstream gamers aka Noobs play GOW for its story, violence, sex mini game, graphic, atmosphere but never for its combat system.
Bayonetta is for Real Gamers who love challenge and play for its actions, Climax Actions.
I'm pretty sure noobs can't understand it.
What kind of retarded wrote this?!
ReplyDeleteHere's where I stopped reading:
"So much so that titles like Dante's Inferno and you guessed it, Bayonetta, are learning from the veteran series"
The veteran series? God of War? Do you know a game called Devil's may Cry? You know, the one that God of War shamefully ripped off and adapted to greek mithology?!
Oh, Devil May Cry also had the "innovations" that you said were introduced by God of War: combos and button-mashing. Oh, and what innovations those are, nobody has ever thought about making button combos and button mashing before, amazing!
BTW, Bayoneta is from the director of Devil May Cry.
I really like the fact that Capcom's game isn't even mentioned on this article, wonder why?=)
Um dude, God of War IS a veteran Series. Just cause Devil May Cry was before it doesn't make it any different.
ReplyDeleteSo wouldn't you say, Medal of Honor is a veteran series? And so is Call of Duty. You little boys hide behind "Anonymous and call the author names... At least he has the balls to speak truth.
There's no way, you can say Bayonetta is better than God of War... That's just retarded

ReplyDeleteAdmin.
God of War 3 isn't even out yet. Let's not base all our worship on the demo gents. :)
ReplyDeletewell done for reviewing a game before you've played the full thing. you FOOL
ReplyDeleteLOL you guys are funny. The Author is right and you know it. The guy above me, you're the fool, GoW 1 & 2 is out, plus going on the game's history, we can def conclude that Bayonetta doesn't stand a chance against Kratos. LOL u dudes know.....
ReplyDeleteWake up gamers.... GamesThirst has now become the hottest site around; and come to think it, it's just a blog....

You Hypocrites!! Listen to what edge said:
ReplyDeleteedge magazine:A beautiful and graceful fighting game that lets imagination loose, and winks before slapping Dante, Kratos and every other hero back to the drawing board. [Christmas 2009, p.90]
OK did Edge Magazine play GoW III yet? NO!!!!
But I hear none of you calling them fanboys!!!!
Nice article, cause, you'd have to be a full to think this new IP stands a chance against the venerable series - God of War..
I was really hoping Bayonnetta was going to be a great game. Especially after all of the hype leading up to the demo. WHAT A LET DOWN! I beat every foe and got no thrill out of it. It's a "button masher" with no skill needed. Sure, some of the effects were kind of cool (nothing special either), but the gameplay stunk. I had no idea what was going on...just mash, and mash, and mash those buttons!! I won't be buying it. How in the world did this game get a 40/40 score from Famicom?
ReplyDeleteI like how 5 year - old hypocrites and parasites call themselves real gamers because they can look at a game objectively, then go on to say all GOW is is sex mini - games, what a bunch of morons!
ReplyDeleteIf any of you jerm - incubators had been gaming for more than a few weeks you'd realise WHY GOW is so universally accepted by REAL critics and REAL gamers.
Kids play Bayonetta to say "Ha ha...look, when i punch people her boobies move! BOOBIES!!! Look mum, i want this!!!". Real gamers play GOW because of it's enticing story, amazing visuals and fantastically fun combat. Then again, the people on here who like Bayonetta probably wouldn't understand GOW 3 because basic reading ability is needed to fully enjoy the game, which not too many fanboys have theese days.
I feel GOW is a better series, where i cant wait for the 3rd one, looks amazing, with its new additions, and most likely new puzzles / things to figure out. I like GOW and DMC, and played both as this is my favorite genre, yet when i saw Bayonetta, i was like "eh, looks ok" . I think Bayonetta is a good game, but the animations, and the character, and that suit, makes me not take it seriously, idk, its like all you do (only played demo, seen many videos ) is fight and beat enemies up, where GOW seems to involve more thought in the game. I say these games cant really be compared until both are out, but i really want GOW 3 a lot more.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in the end as a ps3 owner, ill be getting both anyway : )
SHUT UP!
ReplyDeleteAbout only fools says Bayonetta says it's better than God of War.
What the hell do you know about Hack n Slash!
I love Hack n Slash and have a passion for it, so therefore I know what's a good hack n slash or not!
Bayonetta is a true form of all hack n slash rolled into 1! (I don't need to explain myself)
Go play other hack n slash before mouthing off about GOW is the best hack n slash!
I think the problem lies in the fact that people are comparing to disticntly different action games as the same beast. While they both offer combo systems they are wildly different games. God of War has a far less sophisticated combo system but the combos can be pulled off at a basic level to complete the game without using a lot of flash in the combo itself. Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are basically the same game, and with good reason since they were created by the same man. They have deep combo systems ain to the ones you would find in a fighting game. If you want to make a blanket statement that they are both action games and should be judged as such you would be wrong and that is the case the author is making (I hope), but there is a reason games are called God of War clones and Bayonetta would technically be an evolution of DMC. Two very different games. Dante's Inferno and Heavenly Sword are God of War-esque games, I think some of the combos actually have similar animations. Bayonetta is the same way and if you want to throw Ninja Gaiden in with that crowd you can because it is more similiar to that style of play.
ReplyDeleteAnd all of you people mouthing off the way you are about either game or the author of this post should be ashamed. Acting like a bunch of childish asshats. Both games are great and everyone is entitled to opinion but the games are very different action games if you look at them the right way which almost nobody is.
I've played both the PSN Bayoneta demo and the God of War collection's God of war 3 demo.
ReplyDeleteHate to break it to you guys but bayoneta truly does kick Krato's ass.

ReplyDeleteBayonetta combined Uncharted 2 cinematic fight + climax action....is very fresh idea.
ReplyDeletebut GOW3
lol @ this article.. clearly written by a delusional fanboy. You obviously havent done any research, if you do did you would know that Bayonetta is made by the creator of the original Devil May Cry(s).
ReplyDeleteHe recreated this genre.. not GoW. GoW are fun games in their own respect, dont get me wrong. But they really bring nothing special to the table except for brutality. They're basically action/adventure versions of Mortal Kombat.
The skilled gamers will be playing Bayonetta.
Silly Boys. The creator of DMC is NOT the one who created this genre. What about Onimusha?
ReplyDeleteGood article dude, most of the folks in here talking crap are children who haven't played any of the GoW games..
This article sucked and shouldn't have got out of this blog
ReplyDeleteDante's Inferno can be compared to God of War
ReplyDeleteBayonetta can only be compared to DMC

ReplyDeleteWhen you boys start acting like men, then your comments will be deemed readable.
ReplyDeleteUntil then stay out of here will your vile mouths.
Mod.
Oh my God.
ReplyDeleteFirst, this article was written EXCLUSIVELY to start a trolling flame war of Lord of the Rings trilogy proportions. Second, the first God of War is great, but in no way original (I think someone in the comments posted about Rygar already) and the second one's story line is simply retarded. He killed Zeus for Christ's sake...why is he still so fucking angry? Somebody has issues!
Third, I simply love how everyone has an opinion on Bayonetta and God of War III when the titles HAVEN'T EVEN COME OUT! Judging a game by a demo is exactly why gamers deserve consoles like the Wii. Short attention spans, short tempers and short, flame-enabled articles all speak volumes about these commenters being 'little men'
Lmao? What points? This article doesn't *ps3 fanboi impression*"Good points by the author* It has a scrubby opinion lol, this is your article;
ReplyDeleteBayonetta has combos and button reaction commands, which clearly means GOW rapes it in every direction.
Article= scrubby opinion, just like that scrub kratos.
Mythology is awesome God of war is awesome, and bayonetta looks pretty damn cool
ReplyDeleteGod of War has the superior story, but I was underwhelmed by the graphics when I played the demo and the gameplay hasn't changed very much since the first game. Why haven't they given him more combos to increase the variety? I can still use the same button combination to take out every enemy. The gameplay is vastly superior in Bayonetta and I will probably end up just renting GOW3 to see how the story ends.
ReplyDeleteThe whole premise for this article is silly. What I get from reading the article is that GOW is the first series to be a flashy hack n' slash, and everything else is simply copycat.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely pathetic. DMC and more importantly Ninja Gaiden (my fave game of ALL TIME) introduced this style of game. I happen to love both the DMC and GOW franchises. This article was nothing more than a igniter for a stupid flame-war of fanboys. Agree to above poster about attention spans, demo's are often a tease if anything.
The Bayonetta demo didn't impress me at all. It's over-hyped, nuff said. If you guys really want to agrue read this: The Battlefield Bad Company 2 demo is WAY better then Modern Warfare 2. It's true.
ReplyDeleteYour right Modern Warfare sucks donkey dick compared to Battlefield!!
ReplyDeleteYour entire argument seems based on the fact that God of War 'did it first' and therefore by default is better. This is faulty logic at best and a terrible reason to write an article about it at worst.
ReplyDeleteThe same logic dictates that Doom is better than Halo. While a small section of the gaming population would agree, they are stubbornly clinging to nostalgia instead of objective evaluation.
this is ridiculous played the demo only idiot xbox fanboys would say that Bayo is better because its on their system too. Honestly i liked Bayo but had more fun playing GOW3 and the graphics do not compare either. Also i did do alot of button mashing on Bayo so i dont know what ppl are talking about. Dont get me wrong the game is good but no way near GOw3 caliber at least frm the two demo perspectives.
ReplyDeleteWhat sets God of War apart is it's style and Coolness. Regardless of the depth, Bayonetta's style is not as "cool" as G.O.W. When the style/art direction is as good as it is in God of War and it has solid play mechanics people will love it. This was the case with Mortal Kombat II back in the day. It was just so "Cool" and it was also a solid fighter, although not very deep. Bayonetta maybe deeper and has great art on in it's own right but it is not in the same league as far as the Cool Factor. Until G.O.W. starts adding silly things to it's game people will always love it.
ReplyDeleteI've played both the PSN Bayonetta demo and the God of war 3 demo. Hate to break it to you guys but Kratos truly does kick Bayonetta's ass :)
ReplyDelete"Dante's Inferno can be compared to God of War
ReplyDeleteBayonetta can only be compared to DMC"
Agree 100%
Does anybody remember Ryu Hyubusa and the Ninja Gaiden series??? The guy has to be the coolest playable character in all of gaming!!! Killer Cool!!!
ReplyDeleteBayonetta stomps her stilettos all over Kratos' face. ;)
ReplyDeleteBayonetta isn't even fit to do Kratos's laundry. :P
ReplyDeleteThis article is facepalm-worthy. You sound like one of these 13-year-old morons who think Halo was the first FPS.
ReplyDeleteResident Evil 5 really wasn't all that great. It's an OK game but they recycled too much from RE4. (someone commented on this) Now, about the debate at hand: God Of War drew heavy inspiration from Devil May Cry, that is a fact. It's not a bad thing, but you should do some research before doing an article. Bayonetta only used the QTEs from God Of War, however, the QTEs first appeared in Shenmu, not God Of War.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the driving force behind Bayonetta is the creator of Devil May Cry, look it up, it's the same person.
indeed
ReplyDeleteThese graphics are incredible!
ReplyDeleteIf you want a combo vid, just look at devil may cry, that shit is steep, and go ahead and shoot me down with the flaming comments..this will prove you wrong anyway. A lot more crazy then god of war's pretty good combos.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T_RdUPNg6k
