Rumor Thirst: Playstation 4 tech discovered?

Although we agree that it's way too early to be talking about the next Playstation home console, we must report on this story that claims Sony has already chosen the technical setup for the PS4.

If the translation is to be believed, the new iteration in the PS family will launch in 2012 and will be powered by Imagination Technologies PowerVR Series 6 that utilizes technology known as "TBDR," which is 3-5 times better than a competitive level nVidia/ATI graphics card.

Sega used TBDR to help power the old Dreamcast which in its time was miles above the competing consoles. But the most outstanding part of this rumor is that Sony will retain the Cell Processor currently utilized in all PS3s and it will work hand-in-hand with the Cell Imagination's technology.

"The Playstation 4 shall use a high end variant of the six series line. Performance, specifications and features are at this time unknown. The series 6 shall receive an official announcement from IMGTEC sometime in 2010, with initial models targeting the smartphone and netbook sector."

The rumor gets louder by also saying that SECI has decided to work further with IMGTEC for the next generation PSP. The new handheld will utilize the Series 5XT.

Interesting information, but do take with a grain of salt since it's still a rumor. One that's plausible nonetheless; especially where it says that the PS4 will be released in 2012, it would be in line with Sony's tradition.
