Video Thirst: Sony's Jack Tretton Talks About PS3's Growth And The PS Brand Lasting Appeal

In an interview with Fox Business, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton talked about the PS3's growth last November, shortages, and the fact that they've been in the business for many years and are not afraid of the competition.

Fox Business: Even though you had the year-over-year growth you're still behind Xbox - you're still behind Nintendo, so how do you plan to get ahead of them for 2010? Loaded Question I know but I got to ask it.

"Well ultimately we've always said it's a marathon not a sprint and I think the growth numbers we're seeing are indicative of the fact that people are embracing the PlayStation message and ultimately it's not where you start it's where you finish - we've seen competition come and go over the fifteen years we've been in the industry but our consoles have always been successful - you look at the PlayStation 2 it's in its tenth holiday season still selling extremely well but only the most ardent gamers could even remember who our competition was when PlayStation 2 debuted back in 2000," he said.

Sony says PSPgo/PSP sales triple at some retailers

The all digital PSPgo is now available in a store near you, well some stores at least, as a few retailers refused to sell the handheld, claiming they saw no way they could make a profit from it. Although our poll is saying something different, it seems Sony's latest version of their portable device is a hit, with sales up as much as 300% at some retailers.

According to Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications and Social Media for SCEA, " It's [PSPgo] had a very positive impact," he said.

Seybold voiced that the launch of the PSPgo has generated "significant increase in revenue for the Playstation Network, driven by a 200% jump in PSP game downloads purchased from Playstation store," North Amerca.

While Sony refused to give specific numbers, they were optimistic about growth.

"With several blockbuster games launching digitally and on UMD in the coming weeks ~ from LittleBigPlanet to Assassin's Creed Bloodlines," Seybold said, "We expect this momentum to continue and look forward to a strong holiday season for both PSPgo and PSP-3000."
