Kill the rumor, next GoW will still be an Xbox 360 exclusive

If you follow gaming news, you can't get away from it. Countless rumors and speculation all hoping to see the Xbox 360 blockbuster title war over to the PS3. It's not going to happen so let's kill the rumor. Here's why.

We'll start with the old and end with the new. The rumor train was ignited when Epic Games boss, Mark Rein said at TGS, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation." After his statement, the gaming media began speculation on what he meant. Some said Mr. Rein was hinting at a multiplatform release for the next title and others thought he meant the next cycle of consoles. Both assumptions were wrong.

After those remarks sent the internet into an upheaval, Eurogamer met up with Mark asking him to clarify himself. Mr. Rein then made it perfectly clear and said he misspoke and if Gears of War three existed and were to be released in the next four to five years, it would indeed be on this generation of consoles. Note, he never said a multiplatform release, but this the seventh generation of consoles.

Four to five years actually makes sense as this generation is shaping up to be the longest running in the history of the industry. Microsoft and Sony have yet to make a profit on their respective systems and no one wants to go full throttle into another generation without at least recouping what was lost. It's only common sense; Microsoft is set to release Project Natal which according to them will be launched as if it were a next gen console, and Sony will release the Wand sometime in spring of next year all in an effort to lengthen the life of both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Rein wanted everyone to know that Gears of War 3 will be on the software giant's flagship console. Why? Because it don't make sense to jump ship, leave behind millions of fans and start afresh with a new base in the same generation. Gears of War sold almost six million units (5.91 million), while Gears of War II sold roughly same amount as the original (5.23 million).

So as we stated earlier, the best must be saved for last, this one really hammers down some 10-inch nails into the rumor's coffin.

Yesterday it was announced that Microsoft is hiring 54 talented people, most of whom will join the Project Natal team and 343 industries. Interestingly enough, a few good men out of the pack will be chosen to lead some pretty big titles.

Microsoft Game studios is seeking a highly experienced lead producer who will work with Epic to "drive the success of Gears of War", a new job advert has revealed. This according to develop.

And there you have it, there's no way MS will be funding development of the next Gears of War only to have it go multiplatform. The rumor's dead, let's all move on.

Thoughts?

  3. GOW is God of War and its Sony exclusive.

    ReplyDelete
  4. it might remain xbox exclusive but it's not certain

what is certain however is that there won't be anymore Gears of War on the current xbox360

it was confirmed by Epic's CEO and by Cliff Bielinsky on separate interviews

  5. First I've heard of this multiplat rumor. I guess the "rumor" didn't flood the net after all.

  6. GoW is God of War.......

It seems to me ur a *new* gamer.....

  7. GOW is God Of War.Sony's exclusive.what are you talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Um, don't blame the author if you guys are new to gaming. GoW = Gears of War, GoW also = God of War so what are you guys talking about.

And to the other newcomer who said this is thr first time this has been on the web, you must not have been looking around long either. The web and forums are flooded with this kind of stuff.

And to the author, I agree, it has been killed, but I don't care, I'll be on my Xbox 360 enjoying it!

  9. @anonymous

    uh...no

    GoW = Gow of War
    Gears = Gears of War

I mistook this article as referring to the GoW instead of Gears, because the author used the wrong acronym...or he's just a fanboy.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Please learn to use the proper acronyms... you're confusing all the fanboys

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sorry if we confused the fanboys lol. BTW for the folks who would like to label GamesThirst as biased to one particular console, or company, surely they haven't searched through our site.

  12. This piece is mostly true, so there's nothing I can say but good job at making this clear.

I've been hearing the rumors, so thanks for killing it dead!

  13. GOW (God Of War) has ALWAYS been and WILL ALWAYS be a Playstation exclusive.

God Of War came out before Gears Of War and therefore has the right to use the acronym "GOW". Anybody who's been gaming for more than 2 months would know that.

Anyway - on to the article - in case you don't know (I'm assuming you don't) Microsoft and Epic had a signed contract that confirmed the exclusivity of the Gears Of War franchise.....that contract was for 2 games. Microsoft have HAD 2 exclusive games and HAVE NOT signed a new contract for further installments in the franchise. Which means that, right now, Gears Of War 3 could end up being a PS3 exclusive. It probably won't but it could. Right now nothing is confirmed because Epic haven't agreed to further exclusivity deals with Microsoft so why don't you "Journalists" do some research on the gaming industry first before "Killing" theese rumours?

Right now the only thing that's confirmed regarding Gears 3 is that NOTHING has been confirmed. Get over it!

  14. Um, David, this is for you, because apparently you don't read:

Next time read before you rant.

  15. I Don`t understand it look how much money MW2 made being multiplatform Why wouldn't SONY & MS want this for all games sounds like more money for every 1. They said gears of war sold 5.9 million why not multiplatform it and sell 10 to 15 million units im not saying just gears of war but most exclusives look at how much more money every 1 makes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 10-inch nails? Don't you mean... NINE INCH NAILS?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Misleading title...........

    ReplyDelete
  18. 4-5 years is the longest in gaming history?!?

Ever heard of the PS2? Its still going strong Sony has a product life cycle of 10+ years.

    ReplyDelete
  19. if the game has the same lag issues as gears 2 does, it won't sell half the copies gears 1 or 2 did. you can take that to the bank.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To the guy who replied to me - maybe you should learn to read. Microsoft do NOT own Epic - therefore those 54 people being hired to work on Microsoft's internal project will have NO relation to the Gears Of War franchise.......are you really this much of a beginner? Epic are a third - party developer you genius, if Microsoft is hiring 54 people to work on internal studios (343 Industries) then they WON'T be working for Epic......my god, NOBODY can be this stupid!

They are stated as looking for ONE producer to aid Epic, not 54. The other 53 will be working on Microsoft's internal projects so why are you even mentioning them in this article??? Gears Of War is NOT an internal project.....even the simplest of blind fanboys would know that.

Also - just because they're hiring one producer to AID Epic does NOT automatically mean they will be funding the entire development of the game like you said.

Next time - read the information before you draw conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  21. David shut up, read the article again and stop trolling.

I never said Epic was owned by MS. Only that according to Develop, they're hiring people, some of which will lead production on the next Gears title.

Now common sense would tell you that if MS is investing money in the next installment of Gears, there's no way they'll allow it to go multiplat.

And if you're going to respond, keep your insults to yourself, or else get universally banned.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anon @ 9:01am:
Gosh did you even read the full thing? The article clearly states that MS and Sony would like to EXTEND this current generation a few more years (4-5) because they haven't made enough profits to go into the next.

We're currently in the fourth year of this generation, that would send us 9-12 years when all is said and done.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It has been killed indeed. Good points you listed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I always thought that Gow meant god of war?

Has gaming cahnged to were Gow means gears of war?

If you people want to have both Gow then Gow is god of war and G0W is gears of war

    ReplyDelete
  25. Feck all the idiots. THere are some of us who can actually read with understanding. I understand exactly what the author is saying here. Reid clearly stated that there really isn't anything planned for a Gears 3 right now, but if there is to be one, it'll stay on the PLATFORM it started with. Sheesh, stupidity and misinformation is contagious.

  27. That guy David McFAIL knows his stuff... NOT!!!! Seriously. Why would Microsoft hire a producer to work with Epic on a title that 'could' go multiplat? No sense whatsoever. Feel free to lash out on me with whatever insults you can think of... U'll still be an idiot...LOL...

    ReplyDelete
  28. gears sucked azz anyways.. 2d fire... joke of a game...

    ReplyDelete
  29. the tech is not advance enough yet for a new gen, a new console right now might be a little more powerful than the PS3 but it won't be a generation ahead

    ReplyDelete
  30. David: for a "non-biased" site you sure write about all things that are good for Microsoft (how they're not sweating, etc) and usually only biased sites have to come out and say they're not biased

I remember when you included left 4 dead 2 on the 2010 360 line up just to beef it up and compare to PS3's, if that's not biased I don't know what is then

  33. David Macphallus - You're a retard. Go back to sleep in your Mom's basement and stop making us all dumber.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Microsoft paid production cost of Gears 1 & 2 and you bet that they are doing the same for 3.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah well, on how many DVD's exactly? Forget about EPIC, Unreal engines & 5vs5 Multiplayer on a single DVD, 12-16 months from now we'll see KZ2's own engine evolved in Killzone 3, on a 50GB Whopper. Followed by Naughty Dog Engine 3.0, and you know who. I'm not sure that PS Gamelibrary thing is calles ICE or Edge, but it's working. Just look at the games. The games, not the sales figures. We don't play Wii now do we?

    ReplyDelete
  36. ive always seen the acronyms like this

    GoW = gears of war
    GOW = god of war

isnt that simple.....ok....for you tards out there....the 'o' is small in gears and capitalied in god of war.....god of war did come out first so it gets the big 'o'.

and one more thing....gears of war is a great video game. havent played god of war but i have only heard good things.

if you are a fan of gears of war i stongly suggest reading the books by karen traviss. it really clears some stuff up about the game.

and why the hell would it go multiplat....that would mean that i would just have to wait longer to GoW3.....AND IM SICK AND TIRED OF WAITING

    ReplyDelete
  37. MS owns a piece of the Gears IP so yeah that title is definitely safe.

    ReplyDelete
  38. To the anonymous troll replying to me - you are a perfect example of why in - breeding is a bad thing. Why don't you MOVE OUT of your mom's basement and do her a favour??? I'm sure she's got enough to be depressed about without taking care of a dumbass like you as well.

  39. My Dear David Mac-limp-phallus.

How creative, you basically copied and pasted my exact comment and said it towards me. So clever. With truly originally thoughts like this, you should go into making games not making idiotic comments on message boards.

I look forward to your next copy and paste reply.

  40. Gears of War = Gears; God of War = GOW.

  41. Playstation hires people to represent themselves and work with many third party titles with their tech. That doesn't make it exclusive, it just means that they want the 360 version to be more polished. Since nothing on the 360 has matched the graphical powerhouse of the original Uncharted, it would make sense that they would push people to help develop their games. I mean, the PS3 has already released many games way ahead of the original Uncharted, and their upcoming games are even getting better. The 360 has reached it's limit.

Don't forget Epic is behind the Unreal engine, which Microsoft would want some qualified people helping out with to assure the engine works very well with their limited hardware.

    ReplyDelete
  42. to the idiot who said MS owns a piece of gears IP....LMAO!!!! no they dont gears is 100% Epics u idio. Next time do som research to not look like an ass.

  43. next console generation.
how the %$#@ can you get that mixed up as a title for the PS3.
    NEXT CONSOLE GENERATION.
NEXT! being the key word, last time i checked the ps3 is out NOW! so its hardly a next generation console.
but thanks for giving it a massive compliment it is a seriously powerfull beast.
so much so one could believe it is a next gen system ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. can we make up our mind please?
ive lost count the amount of times both mark and cliffy b have said gears 3 will not be out till next generation of consoles.
now hes saying IF we release gears 3 in the next 4-5 years it will be on current gen systems.
before hes saying NO no gears 3 till new consoles, now hes saying mmmmmm maybe will see.
can we please make up our mind?
also i sincerely doubt gears 3 will be on the 360 if its not to come out for 4-5 years time.
im 100% positive that in say 5 years time making it late 2014 that the 360 is going to be gone dead in the water.
consoles normally only last 6 years, ok sony and M$ want to extend them but how far can they stretch it?
lets say they add on 2 more years that puts the release of the new 360 in 2013 1 year before the supposed gears date.
M$ would be INSANE! to release a new system and than release gears 3 on the 360 and give new console updates the finger.
    there not that stupid.
so hes saying 2 things and if you ask me both are BS.
1 gears will be out in 4-5 years BUT on the 360.
2 he has said many times that gears 3 would be a launch title for the next 360.
i sincerely doubt gears 3 will be out on the 360 again, if it is, it will be within the next 3 years.
i would put my money on gears 3 being a launch title for the next 360 seeing thats what hes been saying all along AND as further proof cliffy B said were using almost 100% of the power for gears 2.
so how would they improve for gears 3 all the juice is gone.

    ReplyDelete
  45. To Mr Anonymous (The one that replied to me) - you're right! With my amazing copy/paste skills i SHOULD go into making games. I'm sure Microsoft would be more than willing to offer me a job seeing as how copy/pasting from Sony is their specialty! I'd fit in a treat over there.

I thank you for your suggestion - i am now going to make Microsoft's attempt at a AAA game. My first game will be the highly anticipated "Halo 4: Now It's Just Getting Sad". Here's a little plot outline - just for you:

Master Chief has already battled the most vile, disgusting aliens known to man and has saved the planet many times over. However now he must face his most difficult challenge of all.....he has to move out of his mom's house and find his own apartment!!! Play as the feared Master Chief as he tries to conquer his next challenge - the deadly RES "Real Estate Market"! This First - Person Walking & Talking game will feature all the basic elements of Sony's Playstation HOME but will do it in a way that's sure to give your console the RROD. Don't miss Halo 4: Now It's Just Getting Sad in stores next Summer.

Now i can make this sorry excuse of a game for Microsoft and retire on a pension of £10 Billion while you are still here making idiotic remarks on forums like a diseased troll. Thank you sir........be sure to pick up my "AAA" game next year.

    ReplyDelete
  48. David Mcphail is obviously a brit. He said "favour," anyways, yeah i really don't see Gears going multi-plat, MS isn't stupid, they know gears is a big money maker. Why would they let that go. its kinda like how "Halo" is still going. It made money, Microsoft kept it.
